For UN Vesak Day 2019

In my capacity as President of Chulalongkorn University, I would like to send a congratulatory note to the 16th United Nations Day of Vesak Celebrations 2019, which has been organized for Ha Nam Province in Vietnam by the National Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (NVBS) from May 12th -14th, 2019.
This event will not only be a grand gathering of Buddhists, consisting of Buddhist Supreme Patriarchs and Sangha members, scholars in Buddhist Studies and Buddhist worshippers from around the world, who will convene to celebrate the thrice- sacred day of Vesak, which marks the day of Birth, Enlightenment and Entering Nirvana of the Lord Buddha but will also offer the opportunity for participants to attend an academic conference entitled the “Buddhist Approach to Global Leadership and Shared Responsibilities for Sustainable Societies. The sub-themes of the Conference assure me that Buddhist Teachings still play a vital role in and remain relevant to the modem world, where compassion, ethics, harmony, humanity and stability are so much needed. I am quite confident that the problems that the world is facing nowadays whether they are ecological/environmental problems, the challenge of excessive consumerism, family problems or racism and terrorism, may be alleviated by the Middle Path of the Buddhist approach.
I would like to wish the President of the 16th United Nations Day of Vesak Celebrations 2019 and all who are supporting, cooperating in and contributing to this event great success in their every endeavour. May the three-day event achieve its goals and bring about the peace and wisdom of the right path as expected.
