For UN Vesak Day 2019

It is my pleasure to issue a message for the United Nations 16th Vesak day celebration in Vietnam. Sri Lanka as a country has a very long friendship and cordial relationship with Vietnam. It is happy to hear that Vietnam is going to host this years world Vesak day celebration in their land.

Buddhism, a doctrine disperse on a universal foundation cannot be confined only for its followers or any specific nation, its shadow is common for all beings regardless of nation, region and birth. Celebration of Vesak day, traditionally recognized as the day on which Buddhas Birth, enlightenment and demise occurred is considered as the greatest the most important wholesome celebration of Buddhists around the world.

We as Buddhists have come across vivid challenges throughout the history. But on all those occasions the ardor, exertion and resiliency we need to rebuild country and to rise again as a nation on the base of kindness and compassion was provided by the Buddhism, undoubtedly, Buddhism is the force behind the glory of our great nations.

In succinct, the Buddha admonished us, not to do evil, cultivate wholesome and purify ones mind. This shows the path to resolve the internal spiritual conflicts of human beings later on excessive of which comes to social conflict. Buddhism guide to provide the necessary guidance on moral ground to form the substantial policy that we need to figure out many of the issues confronting today. Obviously, in my understanding this sole way of forming the utopia that we are aiming for.

After UNs acceptance  of  Vesak  day  as  international  Day of Vesak in order to the proposal made by Sri Lanka in 2000, throughout the past 18 years different Buddhist countries hosted the Vesak celebration in their countries. But still, there is a vacuum in utilizing the Buddhas message for propagation and equip harmony, tolerance, peace and equity in human mind. I wish that this conference through it intensive discussions will pave the way to explore the common link between Buddhist countries and flourish the message of the Buddha to enroot and promote compassion, loving-kindness, equity and harmony all around the world. I am sure that, the outcome of this celebration will surely guide us to overcome many of the challenges that we are facing today as Buddhists.

On this occasion, it is utmost pleasure to convey my sincere thanks to the Government of Vietnam for hosting such massive celebration in their country.
I wish you all success. “May the triple gem shine upon you.
