For UN Vesak Day 2019

It is a great honor for me to write this Congratulatory Message for the 16th United Nations Day of Vesak Celebrations 2019 in Vietnam. The thrice sacred day of Vesak has been always for the Buddhists of a paramount importance as a day of celebrating the birth, enlightenment, and passing away of the Buddha Gautama. The international significance of this day is reflected by the resolution of the United Nations General Assembly of 15th December 1999. Following this resolution, a very precious tradition of world wide celebrations of the United Nations Day of Vesak has been established which is already reaching its 16th anniversary.

Buddhism was born more than 2.5 thousand years ago. Despite a very old tradition, it has a remarkable potential to address the most pressing, urgent and vital issues of our present world. The themes of United Nations Day of Vesak Conferences document this very clearly – Education and Global Citizenship, Buddhist Path to World Peace, Buddhism and the World Crisis and most recently Buddhist Contribution for Human Development. The conference presentations have been very valuable and inspirational contributions to a current large discourse.

Fundamental principles and teachings of Buddhism provide theoretical foundation, methodological guidance and humanistic, religious and philosophical background, most urgently needed nowadays. This is a very important dimension of Buddhism.

The theme of the 16th United Nations of Vesak Celebrations 2019 is Buddhist Approach to Global Leadership and Shared Responsibilities for Sustainable Societies. This theme is of an utmost importance and I wish that the ideas formulated at the conference have a strong impact on the society and human beings world widely.
