For UN Vesak Day 2019

I am happy to learn that the National Vietnam Buddhist Sangha is hosting the 16th United Nations Day of Vesak in Ha Nam, Vietnam on 12-14 May 2019. I would like to thank the organizers for hosting this important event.

The Vesak Day is a special occasion for the Buddhist community all over the world and for those who follow Buddhas teachings. It is equally important day for peace- loving people around the world.

Buddhas teachings of love, compassion, nonviolence and empathy transcend across the societies. The United Nations General Assembly in 1999 passed a resolution on the International Day of Vesak to commemorate the birth, enlightenment and mahaparinirvana of Buddha. Since then, the day has been on the international calendar to observe, recall and re-commit to the eternal teachings of Buddha.

The Vesak Day has a very special significance for the Nepali people that Gautam Buddha was born in  Lumbini,  Nepal.  The holy place of Lumbini is the fountain of Buddhism. Nepali people, irrespective of theirreligion, caste or creed, observe the day by organizing various programmes throughout the country.

In the context of todays uncertainties, conflicts, arms race, violence, hatred, bigotry, radicalism and fundamentalism, Buddhas teachings of non-violence, compassion, harmony, right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness and right meditation are highly relevant and provide us useful insights to deal with such complex problems.
On the auspicious occasion of the Vesak Day, let us dedicate

ourselves to internalize the eternal messages of Buddha and to pursue the path he has shown to achieve universal peace, stability, prosperity and happiness.

I wish the 16th United Nations Day of Vesak 2019 a grand success.

Prime Minister of Nepal
K P Sharma Oli
